A/Professor Avi Lemberg

I am a paediatric gastroenterologist with over 10 years of experience in the management of children with gastrointestinal diseases. I completed my medical training at The University of NSW and my paediatric training at The Sydney Children’s Hospital before undertaking dedicated fellowships in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at both The Sydney Children’s Hospital and the British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. In addition I have worked as a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at The BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. I was appointed Head of Paediatric Gastroenterology at Sydney Children’s Hospital in 2009 and am also Director of the Children’s Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Clinic (IBD) at The Sydney Children’s Hospital. I have extensive clinical and research experience in paediatric inflammatory bowel conditions and other gastrointestinal disorders.

In 2004, I was the inaugural recipient of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Travelling Scholarship to undertake advanced training in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada. I subsequently returned to Australia and received the GESA Young Investigator Award where I was invited to present my research work at an International IBD Meeting in Mallaga, Spain.

I have clinical research interests in IBD, Probiotics, Gut Bacteria, Coeliac disease and Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE)/Gut allergy and I am examining clinical trends in patients with these illnesses. I was promoted to Conjoint A/Professor at University of New South Wales in 2013. I will have published more than 80 peer reviewed publications and book chapters by mid-2015.
